Adult Psychoanalysis
Our Adult Psychoanalysis program provides both a thorough, scholarly grounding in the theories and principles of psychoanalytic thought and an intensive training in the skills necessary to become an accomplished psychoanalyst.
The course of training covers a period of not less than four years and consists of three key components:
- the candidate’s own personal analysis with an approved training analyst
- three weekly two-hour seminars at the Psychoanalytic Center
- intensive one-on-one supervision of three or more psychoanalyses conducted by the candidate
These three aspects of training go on concurrently, enabling the candidate to integrate knowledge gained from teachers and texts, self-knowledge achieved through personal analysis, and skills acquired from the experience of doing supervised casework.
Upon completion of this course of training, a Certificate in Psychoanalysis is awarded to the graduate by Columbia University.
Courses are taught on Mondays from 11 to 12:45 and from 1:30 to 3:00 and on Thursdays from 1:00 to 2:45. All Monday classes are taught in person, and all Thursday classes are taught over Zoom. Supervision can take place on Zoom or in person at the mutual convenience of the trainee and supervisor.
The Center is aware of the needs of those candidates with important commitments to other activities such as academia, research, or family. The Center can provide an alternative extended training program tailored to the needs of the individual candidate.
