For Medical Students
There are numerous ways for you to explore the field of psychoanalysis while still in medical school. We have created some programs specifically with you in mind, and you are free to join in on several others.
Here are the best places to start:
Why Psychoanalysis?
- Attend this free seminar with dinner on the second Tuesday of each month in which an analyst presents two sessions of a treatment and the group discusses how analysis works. Learn More
Electives for Medical Students
- While we are unable to offer any full-time medical student electives, at times we can offer part-time psychoanalytically/psychodynamically informed experiences for medical students who are enrolled in other electives within the CUMC/NYSPI system. These are individualized programs adjusted to the interests of the student. The program could include reading tutorials on a psychoanalytic/psychodynamic topic, participation/observation of the evaluation of patients for psychodynamic treatment, or other topics of interest.
- The elective is open to all medical students (with the consent of their Dean and the Chief of Service for the primary rotation).
- For more information or to discuss setting up an elective for yourself, please contact Justin Richardson, MD (jr195@cumc.columbia.edu)
Evening Lectures
- For a more advanced look at the science and practice of psychoanalysis, you are welcome to attend our evening lectures on the first Tuesday of every month at the New York Academy of Medicine. Learn More
