Appointments and Promotions

There are two types of promotions in the Department of Psychiatry: Junior and Senior. Junior promotions include those to titles of Instructor, Assistant Professor and Associate Research Scientist. Senior promotions are those to Associate Professor, Professor, Research Scientist, and Senior Research Scientist. Junior promotions are reviewed by the Department of Psychiatry Office of Faculty Affairs. Senior promotions are reviewed by the Department of Psychiatry Committee on Appointments and Promotions (COAP) and if approved by this group have a second review by the CUMC COAP. The sections below explain how the promotion process works and provide resources to help you with the various steps.

Identifying a Title: Track & Area of Focus
The Columbia University system has several types of titles. In addition non-tenure track Officers of Instruction apply for promotion in one or more of the three areas of scholarly focus. Faculty may also chose more than one area if this better reflects their involvement at the medical center. This section discusses how these decisions are made.
