Criteria for Advancement

Criteria for Advancement by Area of Scholarly Focus and Rank

This section includes the guidelines for promotion to Assistant, Associate and Professor titles in each of the three areas of scholarly focus (Educational Scholarship and Leadership, Applied Health Care and Public Health, Knowledge Development and Integration-Investigator). These guidelines were established by the CUIMC Committee on Academic Titles and are used throughout the medical center. In the Department of Psychiatry these guideline are used in evaluation of all faculty who are full time in the department regardless of payroll (Columbia, NYState, RFMH). As described above (Summary) faculty who are full time Columbia are appointed to “at CUIMC” titles. Those who are full time in the department (benefits eligible on NYS, RFMH) but part-time or voluntary at Columbia are appointed to Prefix or Suffix titles depending on area of career focus. A faculty member may apply in based on accomplishment in more than one area of focus, if this best fits their career activities.

For individuals who have a only a part-time commitment to the department are expected to have the same types of contributions in their area of focus as full time faculty, though, though depending on the amount of time dedicated to faculty activities the amount/number of accomplishments may vary.
