Internship in Health Service Psychology

The Internship in Health Service Psychology at the NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, Columbia University Irving Medical Center offers an internship with ten positions.  Internship activities are located within the Medical Center complex in northern Manhattan and utilize training facilities at Presbyterian Hospital, Children’s Hospital of New York, The New York State Psychiatric Institute, and other affiliated institutions.

The ten internships are apportioned between an Adult Track (six positions) and a Child Track (four positions) and are filled through the APPIC matching program.  All interns participate in a core curriculum of courses and diagnostic evaluations and treatment of adult patients.  Each track supplements the core curriculum with intensive specialized experience with adults or children.  Adult Track clinical training takes place in both inpatient and outpatient settings.  Child Track clinical training includes child, adolescent, and adult outpatients.

Internship training stresses intensive, direct clinical service that is closely supervised.  The development of clinical skills is fostered in the areas of initial intake evaluation, individual psychotherapy, couples/family psychotherapy, group psychotherapy, and psychological testing.  Training in a variety of treatment orientations, including psychodynamic psychotherapy and behavioral and cognitive behavioral techniques, is included in the curriculum.  A strong academic program supports the intern’s clinical activities.  Scientific research is interwoven throughout the program.

The internship in Health Service Psychology is APA accredited.  Questions related to the program's accredited status should be directed to the Commission on Consultation and Accreditation. Contact information is as follows:
