Fellowship

The Division on Substance Use Disorders sponsors a two-year postdoctoral training program for clinical/translational research careers in substance use disorders. The fellowship has been continuously funded by the National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA T32) for more than two decades, and has in its alumni a number of leading researchers and clinicians in addiction sciences around the country. This unique, integrated training program is designed for physician scientists and basic scientists from a variety of disciplines from basic to applied biological, psychological and social and public health areas.

In addition to fulfilling the training objectives of the NIDA T32 training program, eligible physician scientists can fulfill requirements for Addiction Psychiatry certification from the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN), which will be spread across the 2-year program. Trainees benefit from a diverse set of clinical experiences in both community and academic settings. The inpatient training site is the New York Presbyterian Westchester Behavioral Health Center. Outpatient training sites include the Outpatient Rehabilitation Program at Metropolitan Center for Mental Health, the Methadone Program at the START,  the Columbia University Smithers Program, and the Gambling Disorders Clinic at NYSPI. The fellows will also rotate through and act as addiction psychiatry expert consultants at the Columbia Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program (CPEP), the NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital Pain Management Clinic, the Columbia Consultation-Liaison Service and the Washington Heights Community Service of the New York State Psychiatric Institute.
