Substance Abuse
Herbert Kleber, MD, Chief
The Division on Substance Abuse focuses on antecedents and consequences of substance use, abuse, and dependence with particular emphasis on the development and testing of novel approaches to the treatment of substance abuse. A NIDA funded Medication Development Center, now in its 17th year, is a major supporter both of treatment research related to opiates, cocaine and marijuana as well as pilot studies for Addiction Psychiatry fellows and young faculty. There are over 30 other funded studies that include clinical trials, human behavioral laboratory studies and imaging and cover all the major illegal drugs of abuse as well as alcohol. Mentoring of fellows and junior faculty to become independent investigators as well as education and training of graduate and medical students and residents is an important part of our mission.
