Overview
Dionne R. Powell, MD is a Training and Supervising Psychoanalyst at Columbia University Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research (NY), and the Psychoanalytic Association of New York (PANY-NYU affiliated). She is an Adjunct Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at The New York Presbyterian Hospital, Columbia University in New York, and Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry, Assistant Attending Psychiatrist at The New York-Presbyterian Hospital, Weill Cornell Medical College in New York.
Dr. Powell has taught extensively including in the theory course at CUCPTR and in the psychodynamic psychotherapy program on transference and countertransference and is on the planning committee and one of the teachers in the 2023-2024 Trauma- Informed Psychodynamic Therapies program beginning in the fall of 2024. As well she has had joint evening meetings with the PGY-IV’s from Cornell, Columbia and NYU to discuss the challenges of working with diverse populations from a clinical psychodynamic perspective.
Recent awards include: 2021 recipient of the Candidate’s Council of the American Psychoanalytic Association, (APsaA) Master Teacher of the Year Award, February 28th, 2021. Inaugural recipient of the Margaret Morgan Lawrence Lecture on March 1st 2022, sponsored by the Association of Psychoanalytic Medicine, APM at Columbia University. New York, NY. Solomon Carter Fuller Award and Lecture. American Psychiatric Association (APA) Annual Meeting, New Orleans, LA from May 21-25, 2022. The Debbie Bellman Memorial Lecturer, British Psychoanalytic Association Scientific Meeting: Saturday July 2nd, 2022. London, UK. George E. Daniels Award, 2018, Association for Psychoanalytic Medicine for contributions to psychoanalysis, Columbia University Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research.
She most recently developed and chaired a panel at the International Psychoanalytic Association 53rd Congress in Cartagena Colombia (July 2023) entitled Into the Fire: The Psychic Consequences of Slavery in the Western Hemisphere. And most recently spoke at the Michigan Psychoanalytic Symposium on the Racialized Mind Across the Life Cycle: Psychoanalytic Perspective on April 20th, 2023 in Detroit MI. Dr. Powell is a founding member of Black Psychoanalysts Speak, is Co-Chair of the Holmes Commission on Racial Equity in American Psychoanalysis and Vice-President of the American Association for Psychoanalytic Education.
