Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Video Interview with Dr. Jeremy Veenstra-VanderWeele
Jeremy Veenstra-VanderWeele, MD, interim chair of the Columbia Department of Psychiatry, has spent much of his career working with autistic people and their families to address issues that are interfering with their wellbeing. As a researcher and clinician at NewYork-Presbyterian/Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital, New York State Psychiatric Institute, and Columbia University, Dr. Veenstra-VanderWeele works with people of all ages and often answers common questions about the diagnosis.
In honor of World Autism Month—which begins with the United Nations-sanctioned World Autism Day April 2—we recorded a Q&A with Dr. Veenstra-VanderWeele answering some of those questions and others submitted via social media. The topics range from genetic/environmental factors related to autism and disparities in diagnosis among different demographic groups to the debate over vaccines and autism.
