Research Intern Program (Recruitment)
What to Expect
This internship offers the opportunity to learn about how researchers use available resources and strategies to locate and recruit study participants. Interns will have the chance to increase their knowledge of and abilities in communicating with members of the Latino community. Interns will gain valuable in-home structured interviewing experience, under the supervision of more senior staff. In addition, other opportunities may include discussing ideas when brainstorming about difficult cases, improving quality control (reviewing of interviews, storage of identifying information, and post-data collection procedures), learning new computer software, contributing to a growing list of resources for services available to the public, the possibility for data analysis of previous or current waves, poster presentations, and access to an excellent interdisciplinary team of researchers.
Duties
Duties Include (but are not limited to)Intern will perform structured interviews of youth and parent participants in the field (5 boroughs and over the phone); perform participant tracking and recruitment (both via telephone and home visits), utilize a tracking system to record participant information, data entry, computerization of interviews, assisting with quality control, and other office-related tasks.
Time Commitment
15 hours/week minimum, at least 9 months.
Minimum Qualifications
Required: Bachelor's degree in psychology, anthropology, sociology, social work, behavioral science, human development, public health, or a related social science field is required. Must be available to work some evenings and one weekend day. Candidate must be detail oriented, reliable, and able to work independently under minimal supervision. Candidate must also be a team player and demonstrate an ability to effectively interact with investigators, participants, and other research assistants.
Preferred: Spanish speakers a plus. Licensed drivers with cars a plus.

Research Intern Program (Publishing)
What to Expect
This internship offers a unique opportunity to get involved in the manuscript development and publication process. Interns will also become familiar with the literature on contextual influences on the development of Latino youth and have access to an excellent interdisciplinary team of researchers. Some areas of interest include: depression; anxiety; antisocial behaviors; substance use; neighborhood characteristics; migration; discrimination; acculturation; cultural stress; sexual risk behaviors; marital, peer, and family relationships, social support, ethnic/racial identity, and HIV/STI testing.
Duties
Duties Include (but are not limited to): Intern will conduct literature reviews, table results, prepare references lists, edit and format manuscripts, assist in the process of submitting abstracts for conferences and manuscripts for publication, and manage manuscript-development meetings attended by faculty and research fellows.
Time Commitment: 20 hours/week minimum, at least 9 months.
Minimum Qualifications
Required: Bachelor’s degree in psychology, anthropology, sociology, social work, behavioral science, human development, public health, or a related social science field. Must have excellent writing skills in English. Demonstrated ability to effectively interact with investigators and other research assistants. Candidate must be detail oriented, organized, reliable, able to work independently and under minimal supervision, and a team player. Must be available to work on Thursdays.
Preferred: Previous experience writing academic papers and participating in professional conferences. Familiarity with word-processing software, spreadsheets, and reference managers (e.g., EndNote). Some statistical background and ability to interpret output from statistical analyses.
Master’s degree in psychology, anthropology, sociology, social work, behavioral science, human development, public health, or a related social science field is preferred.
