What substances does STARS offer treatment research studies for?
Currently STARS has outpatient research studies for the following substances:
• Marijuana
• Alcohol
• Opioids (Heroin, Painkillers)
• Nicotine
Note that if you're using more than one substance, you may still be eligible for our studies.
How do I know if I am eligible to enroll in a treatment study?
If you struggle with addiction and feel that you may have an addiction problem, the easiest way to determine eligibility is to submit your contact information here. One of our intake coordinators will call you back within 24 hours to ask you a few basic questions and schedule a free initial evaluation at our Columbus Circle clinic. Please note that you must be 18 years or older to participate in a research study.
If I am found to be ineligible for a research study, how will I get treatment?
If you are ineligible to participate, we will provide you with referrals to other treatment programs.
How much will my treatment cost and is insurance required?
All services including therapy, psychiatric assessments, and medical treatment are provided absolutely free of charge, with no need for insurance. STARS is funded through various grants from research organizations such as the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
What should I expect at my initial screening appointment?
During the screening visit, you will meet with a psychiatrist, psychotherapist and a nurse practitioner to perform both a mental health evaluation and a physical examination. This includes taking vital signs, obtaining an EKG, and drawing your blood. You should bring a government-issued photo ID–like a Driver’s license, passport, EBT card, etc. If you have any particular medical documentation that you feel might be relevant for us to know, please bring a copy along as well.
Is there an opportunity to ask questions about the study before I enroll?
All participants are provided a written document explaining the study procedures. They are also encouraged both before signing up for the study and as the study progresses to ask questions about the study.
If enrolled in a study, how long will I be in treatment at STARS?
Studies typically last 8-24 weeks; after screening, when we have a better idea of which particular study you may be enrolling, we will speak with you more specifically about the duration of your treatment.
Are individuals paid for participating in research studies?
The studies at STARS are treatment studies, not paid studies. To help with transportation, we provide you reimbursement at each visit to cover the cost of travel to and from the clinic.
If I work full time, can I still receive treatment at STARS?
Yes! We offer morning, afternoon, and evening appointments for treatment. We attempt to accommodate a variety of schedules in an effort to provide support to our patients.
Who provides the treatment at STARS? What types of treatments are provided?
Our clinical team at STARS includes addiction psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, social workers, nurse practitioners, and research assistants who work together as a team to provide your treatment. Our services range from study to study, but can include medication, individual psychotherapy, computer-based therapy, outpatient detox, health monitoring and more. Will my family members or friends know that I am seeking treatment at STARS?
We take confidentiality very seriously at STARS. Our staff will not share information about your decision to participate in treatment without your written consent. Under our Certificate of Confidentiality, researchers cannot be forced to release any research data in which you are identified, even under a court order or subpoena, without your written consent.
If someone I know has a problem with addiction, how can I refer them to STARS?
For confidentiality reasons, we cannot accept referrals or make appointments on someone else’s behalf; the person must contact us his or herself. However, we highly encourage you to direct your friends and family members to our website if they might be interesting in treatment.
