Application Procedure and Additional Information
Requirements
Candidates for the Psychiatry Residency Training Program at New York Presbyterian Hospital-Columbia Campus / New York State Psychiatric Institute (ACGME ID # 4003521138) must hold an M.D. or D.O. degree, or must currently be a senior medical student in an accredited U.S. or Canadian medical school. Columbia University is an AA/EEO employer. Applications from minorities and women are particularly encouraged. All applications, including those from international medical graduates, are accepted through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) matching system. This year, we are recruiting for 12 PGY-1 positions starting on July 1, 2025.
Electives
The medical school offers a number of electives for senior students, including visiting students from other institutions. Students can choose a purely clinical elective or can have a research experience ranging from a basic science to a clinical setting. The program offers additional opportunities for those underrepresented in medicine trough the Dr. June Jackson Christmas Medical Student Fellowship. Please note that these fourth year electives are opportunities for medical students to learn more about the Columbia Department of Psychiatry and are not a formal part of the selection process for applicant interviews.
International Medical Graduates
International Medical Graduates must also include the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) certification. Also required is at least one letter of recommendation from faculty affiliated with Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, or an evaluation from a direct clinical experience in the United States or Canada. Applicants must be a U.S. citizen, non-citizen national of the United States, or must be lawfully admitted for permanent residence by October 1st to apply. In terms of visa sponsorship, New York Presbyterian Hospital will only consider those applicants seeking J1 visas.
Applications
Applications consist of:
- the universal application form
- medical school transcript
- three letters of reference
- personal statement (generally fewer than 900 words)
Applications are made to Columbia through ERAS (Electronic Residency Application Service) and must be completed by October 1st. Applications received after October 1st will not be screened. After the completed application is processed by our Selection Committee, applicants will be notified by e-mail to arrange interviews. Dates and times for interviews are offered at that time. Interviews will be held on weekdays during November and December 2024. All interviews will be virtual.
