Psychiatry Residency
From the Director and Associate Directors
Welcome! Thank you for your interest in the Psychiatry Residency Program at Columbia University. Our mission is to train residents to become outstanding clinicians, researchers, and teachers, who will find fulfillment in their work and make meaningful contributions to the field. We know that these goals require psychological and emotional awareness, thorough knowledge of the neurosciences, well-practiced clinical skills, and an environment that actively strives to dismantle inequitable structures and to promote wellness. To this end, we foster the professional and personal growth of our residents through close supervisory relationships with faculty, process groups with other residents, facilitation of personal psychotherapy, activities that aim to promote advocacy and social justice, and an open-door policy for problem-solving with Chief Residents, faculty and us. In addition, we have an extensive didactic program that is broad-based and updated yearly in response to detailed resident feedback. We believe that the key to creating an excellent academic training program is to provide an environment that is supportive, rich in choices, allows for protected class and research time, and offers dedicated mentorship.
Our wonderful residents are integral to the success of our program. They are actively engaged in every aspect of the department and they form a collegial, diverse, close-knit community. Each day our jobs are exciting because we have the opportunity to work with an incredibly talented and dedicated group of residents and faculty. We strongly believe that our program is enriched by its amazing diversity. Each resident brings unique strengths and viewpoints, and, with this in mind, we continually refine the program to meet their individual educational needs. We are dedicated to providing the best educational experience possible, and to helping our residents realize their fullest potential. Our faculty is equally committed to the education of future generations of psychiatrists. We are delighted that you are interested in our training program, and we look forward to showing you what makes it so outstanding!
