Columbia Psychiatry Names Ravi N. Shah Chief Innovation Officer
Ravi N. Shah, MD has been named Chief Innovation Officer for Columbia Psychiatry. In this inaugural role, Dr. Shah will work with research, education, and clinical faculty to open new frontiers for the delivery of evidence-based mental health and addiction care.
Dr. Shah, who has worked in finance and health care consulting and for mental health startups, has served as medical director for the Psychiatry Faculty Practice since 2017. In that capacity, he played a key leadership role in advancing telehealth, transitioning to Epic medical records system, and launching Columbia’s ketamine service, among other accomplishments.
“With years of experience leading digital transformation, Ravi has the expertise to expand Columbia Psychiatry’s footprint in promising growth areas, such as telehealth, smartphone applications, and digital therapeutics,” said Jeffrey A. Lieberman, MD, Lawrence C. Kolb Professor and Chairman, Department of Psychiatry, and Director, New York State Psychiatric Institute. “As Chief Innovation Officer, he will play a critical role in the Department’s plan to further develop and support a culture of innovation.”
A prolific writer on the topic of integrating new technologies into mental health services, Dr. Shah will lead the department’s innovation and digital health initiatives. Currently, he is working with J. John Mann, MD, Paul Janssen Professor of Translational Neuroscience (in psychiatry and in radiology) and co-director of the Center for the Prevention and Treatment of Depression at Columbia, to develop a medication management depression treatment algorithm in partnership with a clinical technology platform.
Dr. Shah will serve as Columbia Psychiatry’s representative to the Dean’s Task Force for Clinical Innovation and Technology and the Chief Medical Information Officer’s Clinical Innovation Advisory Group at Columbia University Irving Medical Center. Dr. Shah graduated with an MD and MBA from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and The Wharton School. He completed his psychiatry residency at Columbia and the New York State Psychiatric Institute, serving as chief resident in his final year.
