Early Stage Investigator Series
Integrating Ecological and Neuroimaging Methods to Characterize Emotion Regulation in Depression
Sarah Herzog, PhD
Assistant Professor of Neurobiology (in Psychiatry)
Columbia University Medical Center
Learning Objectives:
- Describe how dynamic, real-time assessment methods such as ecological momentary assessment (EMA) overcome the limitations of traditional single-timepoint self-report measures for emotion regulation and suicidal ideation in clinical populations.
- Explain the rationale for and applications of a computationally derived neural signature of emotion regulation, and how this fMRI-based measure addresses key limitations of conventional assessments of emotion regulation.
- Identify neurobiological markers relevant to depression that are associated with the emergence and fluctuation of mood symptoms and suicidal ideation in real-world settings.
