Candidates for the Residency Training Program must hold an M.D. degree, or must currently be a senior medical student in an accredited U.S. or Canadian medical school. Columbia University is an AA/EEO employer and applications from minorities and women are particularly encouraged. All applications, including those from international medical graduates, are accepted through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) matching system.
For International Medical Graduates requirements also include the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) certification and USMLE step 1 scores. Also required is at least one letter of recommendation from faculty affiliated with Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, or an evaluation from a direct clinical experience in the United States or Canada. As of the 2008-2009 academic year, our program will not be able to sponsor new incoming H1B visas.
Applications consisting of the application form, medical school transcript, three letters of reference, and personal statement are made to Columbia through ERAS (Electronic Residency Application Service) and should be completed by November 1. After the completed application is processed by our Selection Committee, applicants will be notified by email of interview arrangements. Dates for interviews are offered at that time. Interviews are held on Thursdays from early-November to early-January.
