Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry Fellowship

Description

The Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry Fellowship at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Irving Medical Center offers advanced clinical and academic training in Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry.  The fellowship is accredited by ACGME and leads to eligibility for Board certification in Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry.  Fellows receive intensive supervision from highly experienced faculty members who have held numerous local and national leadership roles in the field while seeing a broad range of patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings.  Inpatient work at New York-Presbyterian Hospital, our tertiary/quaternary care hospital, includes consultations to general medical, surgical, and neurology services, as well as consultations to sub-specialty services including 9 intensive care units, cardiology, oncology, inpatient rehabilitation medicine, HIV/infectious disease, and solid organ and bone marrow transplant.  The outpatient experience, comprising 20% of our fellows’ time and following a collaborative care model, includes experiences in transplant psychiatry (liver, lung, kidney, heart), palliative care, psycho-oncology, and interventional psychiatry experiences in ketamine administration and TMS.

Other components of the fellowship include supervised research, teaching, resident supervision, graduated administrative responsibility, journal club, lectures and classes.  The didactic program includes classes in psychopharmacology, substance use disorders, applied neuroscience, HIV psychiatry, administrative psychiatry, medical ethics, end-of-life psychotherapy, and DEI/minority mental health.  In addition, there is a comprehensive text review to help prepare fellows for the Board examination in Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry.  There are opportunities for collaboration with research faculty at the New York State Psychiatric Institute.

There is occasional weekend call with supervisory responsibility, but no night call.

Program Tracks

Starting in the 2023-2024 academic year we are excited to offer two distinct tracks:

Clinical Track:

The clinical track is the traditional one-year CL fellowship detailed above.  There are two fellowship positions for this track.

Research Track:

New for the 2023-2024 academic year is the CL research track.  This is a two-year fellowship commitment, and there is one dedicated position for this track.  Each year the fellow will dedicate 50% time to clinical pursuits and focus 50% time on CL-related research.  Research can be in a wide-array of fields including, but not limited to, basic science/bench research, imaging, clinical or translational projects, or public health/systems research.  The fellow will work closely with a research mentor either from within our division or from the larger Columbia Department of Psychiatry.  By the end of the two years the fellow will have completed the entire clinical curriculum required to sit for the Board Exam in Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry.

The research track is available on an every-other-year basis.  We will not be accepting applications for the research track for the 2024-2025 academic year.  The next research track cycle will be for the 2025-2027 academic years.
