Specializing in the evaluation, treatment and referral of persons with substance use disorders
Elegant outpatient setting on the Upper East Side of Manhattan
The Program
The Outpatient Evening Addiction Treatment program provides evaluation and treatment in an elegant outpatient setting on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. The program specializes in treating patients with an array of substance abuse disorders who are employed, attending school, and who are maintaining a level of functioning that does not require the intensity of residential, inpatient or day treatment. Treatment is structured within group therapy utilizing evidence-based approaches including cognitive-behavioral skills training and motivational interviewing. Participation in self-help groups is strongly recommended as an adjunct to treatment.
The treatment team includes experienced, board-certified addiction psychiatrists, psychologists, and social workers who have extensive research and clinical experience utilizing cognitive-behavioral and motivational therapies. Group therapy takes place twice weekly. In the initial phase of treatment, the patient is also provided 4 individual counseling sessions over a 4-week period to facilitate the practice of coping skills and strategies in achieving and maintaining abstinence. For the patient with a co-morbid psychiatric diagnosis, psychotherapy and medication therapy outside the substance abuse treatment program is strongly recommended. In this case, the patient is provided a clinical coordinator from the program who is available to communicate with the private therapist, psychiatrist, (and, when indicated, a designated family member) about the patient's clinical functioning and progress.
The Setting
The Outpatient Evening Addiction Treatment program at Columbia University is located between Fifth and Madison Avenues on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. The elegant setting is combined with a comfortable decor that establishes a relaxed atmosphere. Substance abuse groups run for 2 hours with a 10-15 minute break mid-session. Enrollment is limited to 10-12 participants to provide ample time for skills presentation and adaptation of the skills to each patient's coping plan.
For Whom is the Evening Addiction Treatment Program suitable?
The Outpatient Evening Addiction Treatment program serves the patient with an array of substance-related disorders who is struggling with addiction to alcohol and other drugs and is interested in learning new ways to cope with life in lieu of substances. The patient may be referred as part of an aftercare plan from inpatient or residential rehabilitation, by a private psychotherapist or psychiatrist, by another medical professional, or self-referred. For the patient with co-morbid psychiatric diagnosis, the substance abuse treatment coordinator encourages questions, comments, assessments, etc., from the patient's private providers to facilitate continuity in the patient's treatment.
