Autism Services

The Columbia Developmental Neuropsychiatry Program at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital provides evaluation and treatment services for individuals with neurodevelopmental disorders that affect socialization and communication, including, but not limited to, autism and related autistic spectrum disorders. The program is multidisciplinary, including experts from Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Pediatric Neurology, and Developmental Pediatrics.

Evaluation Services

We offer:

  • A developmental neuropsychiatric evaluation that documents strengths and weaknesses in communication, socialization, and behavioral and emotional regulation to serve as a baseline against which progress can be measured;
  • A thorough medical evaluation to identify any underlying genetic, metabolic, and functional or structural brain abnormalities;
  • A detailed written report that is discussed with parents, with time spent to answer questions;
  • Consultation with parents about different educational and treatment options as well as linkage to services of their choice in their local community;
  • Follow-up contact with referring professionals and educational/vocational settings as designated by the parents;
  • Periodic reevaluation to monitor progressTreatment Services for Preschool Children

Services for preschool children include:

  • Supporting parents and families in the interval between diagnosis and school placement;
  • Teaching parents successful ways to promote learning and prevent development of behavior problems;
  • Helping parents promote development of social communication skills within the child's natural environment;
  • Consultation with parents about different educational and treatment options as well as linkage to services of their choice in their local community;
  • Follow-up contact with referring professionals and educational/vocational settings as designated by the parents; and
  • Periodic reevaluation to monitor progress.
  • For School-Age Children and Adolescents
  • Services for school-age children and adolescents include:
  • Consulting with parents and teachers to provide positive behavioral interventions for problem behaviors; and
  • Medication treatment as appropriate.

For Adults

  • Services for adults include:
  • Individual supportive psychotherapy;
  • Consulting with individuals, their families and work/vocational environment to teach positive interventions for problem behaviors;
  • Medication treatment as appropriate; and
  • Family counseling

Payment is made directly by the family at the time of service. Major credit cards are accepted. Fees for evaluation depend upon the extent of services and specialists involved. Fees for subsequent ongoing treatment are based on hourly rates.
